Product Compliance & Building Information

What is a Building Product Information Sheet (BPIS)?
Under New Zealand's Building (Building Product Information Requirements) Regulations 2022, certain designated building products must have disclosed compliance information. You can view our Building Product Information sheets here.

Are your products compliant with NZ standards?
Yes, our plumbing and drainage products are manufactured to relevant New Zealand and Australian standards (such as AS/NZS 1260 for PVC waste fittings, AS/NZS 1477 for PVC pressure pipe, NZS 3501 for copper fittings, and AS/NZS 2642 for polybutylene fittings), and carry Watermark certification.

Can I Do My Own Plumbing or Gas Fitting Work?

Can I legally do my own plumbing in New Zealand?
Most sanitary plumbing work in New Zealand is legally restricted and must be carried out by a licensed plumber under the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006. However, some minor maintenance tasks are generally permitted for homeowners, such as:

  • Replacing tap washers
  • Connecting a washing machine or dishwasher to existing, compliant connection points
  • Repairing or replacing existing taps and ball valves

Installing, relocating, or altering sanitary plumbing (such as basins, toilets, showers, or drainage lines) generally requires a licensed plumber.

Can I do my own gas fitting?
No. Almost all gas fitting work in New Zealand must be carried out by a licensed gasfitter, this includes installing or altering gas appliances, gas lines, and gas connections. The only common exception is basic work on portable gas appliances with an attached gas bottle, such as BBQs, cabinet heaters, or patio heaters, though even here, using a licensed gasfitter is strongly recommended.

Why does this matter?
Using an unlicensed person for restricted plumbing or gas fitting work is illegal, may void your home insurance, and can create serious safety risks and compliance issues, particularly if you later sell your property. You can check whether a tradesperson is licensed on the PGDB public register.

Can NZ Pipe tell me if my project needs a licensed tradesperson?
Our team can offer general product advice, but we recommend checking with the Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board or a licensed professional if you're unsure whether your specific project is legally restricted.
